Penlyn Madressa Origin Story
In the 1970s, as families began settling in the Penlyn area, the only available school was Belthorn Primary. However, there were no religious institutions nearby. The local Muslim community recognized the need for a madressa for their children, particularly as there were no other activities for them after school. Concerned parents took the initiative, and thus, the first madressa was established in the garage of Mr. Tapie Achmat on Chromite Road. The first teacher was Mr. Roberts from Gothic Road.
A few months later, a new location behind OK Superette on Repulse Road became available, and the madressa was moved there. As the number of attending children grew, Mr. Armien Manual and Mr. R. Mohidin began searching for a larger premises. They consulted with other community members and decided to apply for land within Penlyn. Mr. Mohidin took the lead in applying to the city council. Following an inspection of available land, approval was granted for the site where the madressa now stands at 30 Carlier Crescent.
